The Talk Test

Your own mouth is the intensity monitor.

Felicia
41. Schedules patients at a dental office on Elysian Fields. Walks the Big Lake loop in City Park three mornings a week with a coworker. Her watch shows her a zone number and she has never once believed it.

Try to talk while you move. What comes out tells you exactly how hard you are working. Three states, and that is the whole system.

Easy Full sentences You could tell a whole story and never stop for air. This is under the line. The oxidative system is doing most of the work, and it is the only one of the three that can run largely on fat. Most of a week should live here.
At the line Short sentences A few words, then a breath. Speech still works but it is no longer comfortable. This is the spot the research actually anchors: where speech first gets difficult, the effort sits right about at the first breathing threshold. Carbohydrate is taking a bigger share here.
Hard Barely a word A nod, or one syllable. This is over the line. Glycolysis is running the show on glucose, and the first seconds of anything truly all out come from the small stored supply of ATP and creatine phosphate.

The Energy Tank, from the outside

The Energy Tank showed you those three systems from the inside. The Talk Test is how you read them from the outside, standing on a levee path, with nothing strapped to you.

No monitor. No formula. No math. You already carry the equipment.
